New ICD-10 Codes: Underimmunization for COVID-19 status
Effective April 1, 2022, there is a new series of ICD-10 codes for COVID-19 (Z28.31__) that was created to indicate that a patient is unvaccinated or ‘under-immunized’. There is also a new code (effective 4/1/2022) to identify patients who are ‘under-immunized’ status for vaccines other than those for COVID-19; this includes immunizations specified as delinquent or lapsed.
The new codes are:
Z28.310 Unvaccinated for COVID-19
Z28.311 Partially vaccinated for COVID-19 (i.e., not up to date with all the CDC recommended COVID vaccines including appropriate boosters.)
Z28.39 Other underimmunization status (including influenza, TDAP, etc.)
Delinquent immunization status
Lapsed immunization schedule status
NOTE: Codes Z28.310 and Z28.311 are not to be used for individuals who are not eligible for the COVID-19 vaccines, as determined by the healthcare provider.
